The BSL Level 2 Award develops your ability to understand and use British Sign Language in a wider range of everyday and work‑based situations. It builds on Level 1 and prepares learners for more fluent, natural communication.

The qualification is made up of three units:

  • Unit 201 – Receptive Skills in BSL

  • Unit 202 – Productive Skills in BSL

  • Unit 203 – Conversational Skills in BSL

Learners will develop skills in:

  • Understanding longer signed stories, explanations, and conversations

  • Identifying key points, details, and opinions

Assessment
Learners watch a signed video clip and answer questions to show understanding of meaning, detail, and context.


Unit 202 – Productive Skills in BSL

Expressing clear, structured signed information

Learners will develop skills in:

  • Producing longer signed presentations or explanations

  • Using correct BSL structure, placement, and role shift

  • Describing events, people, routines, and experiences

  • Giving clear instructions and information

  • Using a wider range of vocabulary and classifiers

  • Showing confidence with non‑manual features


Assessment
Learners produce a signed presentation or explanation on a set topic, demonstrating clarity, structure, and accuracy.


Unit 203 – Conversational Skills in BSL

Holding natural, flowing conversations

Learners will develop skills in:

  • Taking part in longer two‑way conversations

  • Asking and answering detailed questions

  • Sharing opinions, preferences, and experiences

  • Using turn‑taking, role shift, and appropriate facial expressions

  • Repairing communication breakdowns naturally

  • Understanding and responding to spontaneous signed information

Assessment
A conversational assessment with your tutor or another signer, showing natural interaction, clarity, and understanding.
